Medicinal and Cosmetic Uses of Sage
Over the years, sage has been used for many medicinal and cosmetic as well as culinary products. The active principles are found in the aromatic leaves: tannins, estrogen-like compounds, volatile oils, and organic acids. Sage tonics have been used as treatments for everything from depression to the “female system.” Its scent is said to cleanse the home and purify the air. Its oils are purported to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi, lower the secretion of sweat glands, and contain anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. As mentioned, sage is often used as a compress for wounds and boils, and to draw out splinters. It also works to relieve diarrhea and gastric distress.
